Format of the test
All four skills are evaluated – Listening, reading, writing and speaking – with a stress on contextualized communication for professional purposes.

        1) Listening (approx. 50 minutes)
Same content is provided to all healthcare professionals. It consists of two parts. In part A, candidates listen to a recorded, simulated professional/patient consultation (dialogue) which is to be noted under headings. In part B, candidates listen to the recorded talk on health-related topic which is required to get answered through a range of short and multiple choice questions.
      2) Reading (60 minutes)
Same content is provided to all healthcare professionals. It consists of two parts where part A lasts for 15 minutes and part B for 45 minutes. In part A, candidates are asked to skim and scan short texts and fill the missing words in a summary paragraph. In part B, candidates are asked to read two passages and answer multiple choice questions for each passage.
   3) Writing (45 minutes)
Specific content is provided to specific profession, based on typical workplace situations. In this the candidate is required to write a letter usually a referral letter. Case notes are given to the candidates which must be included in their letter.
   4) Speaking (approx.. 20 minutes)
Specific content is provided to specific profession, based on typical workplace situations. It consists of one-to-one conversation with an interlocutor. It consists of two role-plays. Candidate is asked to play the role of his/her profession while the interlocutor plays the role of a patient or a client.

Timing and result
OET is offered up to 12 times in a year. It can be taken at a range of test venues around the world.
Results are available online in around 16 business days after test. Official statements of the results are released in the post after the declaration of online results.

The results are given in a grade system. ‘A’ grade is the highest grade, next is ‘B’ and then it goes down as C, D and E respectively. Most of the medical and healthcare professional require A or B or C grade to process an application for study, work or migration purposes.

Why OET and not IELTS?
  • A candidate needs not to repeat the whole module in OET, he/she can repeat failed module only. In IELTS, the candidate is required to have appeared for the whole exam again.
  • OET being a profession based exam is dealing with medical topics only thus is easier than IELTS as it is based with an individual’s profession.
